8th century AD. Jesuit Gaspar Vilela was first European to visit and describe the ancient temple complex in 1571. The Jesuits actively proselytized in the region and were inspired to start building their churches and schools in the traditional style of temple architecture. UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed 1993.
