1406–1420. China was never a colony but the emperors, beginning with the Wanli Emperor in 1610, invited Portuguese Jesuit missionaries to court. They likely proceeded only as far as the outer court and never met the emperor personally. UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed 1987.
