Canal built 1826-1832. Oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed 2007. Poonamalie is Tamil for "cat hill" and the name was probably given to this site by a royal engineer who had earlier been posted in India, near Madras.
